Famous quotes containing the words alabama, state, defense and/or force:

    Oh! Susanna, do not cry for me;
    I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee.
    Stephen Collins Foster (1826–1864)

    But one day he met a man who was a whole lot badder,
    And now he’s dead, and we ain’t none the sadder.
    —Administration in the State of Texa, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

    There’s no telling what might have happened to our defense budget if Saddam Hussein hadn’t invaded Kuwait that August and set everyone gearing up for World War II½. —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

    When the excessively shy force themselves to be forward, they are frequently surprisingly unsubtle and overdirect and even rude: they have entered an extreme region beyond their normal personality, an area of social crime where gradations don’t count; unavailable to them are the instincts and taboos that booming extroverts, who know the territory of self-advancement far better, can rely on.
    Nicholson Baker (b. 1957)
