Modern Al Hoceima and Its Spanish Influences

Al Hoceima is now a moderate-size city with an estimated population of 100.000. It has the second-largest port of the Rif Region (Nador being the largest). The first schools built by the Spanish colonials, (a college and an elementary school) and a Spanish catholic church, still exist today.

Playa Quemado, where General Sanjurjo and his troops landed in 1925, is Al Hoceima's most popular beach. It is home to the luxurious Mohammed V hotel, which includes a tennis court, restaurant, cocktail bar and nightclub.

Famous quotes containing the words modern, spanish and/or influences:

Civilization is a conspiracy.... Modern life is the silent compact of comfortable folk to keep up pretences.
    John Buchan (1875–1940)

It’s like a jumble of huts in a jungle somewhere. I don’t understand how you can live there. It’s really, completely dead. Walk along the street, there’s nothing moving. I’ve lived in small Spanish fishing villages which were literally sunny all day long everyday of the week, but they weren’t as boring as Los Angeles.
    Truman Capote (1924–1984)

Professors of literature, who for the most part are genteel but mediocre men, can make but a poor defense of their profession, and the professors of science, who are frequently men of great intelligence but of limited interests and education, feel a politely disguised contempt for it; and thus the study of one of the most pervasive and powerful influences on human life is traduced and neglected.
    Yvor Winters (1900–1968)
