Al Arabiya - Content and Al Jazeera Rivalry

Content and Al Jazeera Rivalry

Al Arabiya was created to be a direct competitor of the Qatar-based Al Jazeera. As a response to Al-Jazeera's criticism of the Saudi royal family throughout the 1990s, members of the Saudi royal family established Al Arabiya in Dubai in 2002. According to a 2008 New York Times profile of Al Arabiya director Abdul Rahman Al Rashed, the channel works "to cure Arab television of its penchant for radical politics and violence," with Al Jazeera as its main target.

Al Arabiya is said to be the second frequently watched channel after Al Jazeera in Saudi Arabia.

Famous quotes containing the words content and/or rivalry:

In most modern instances, interpretation amounts to the philistine refusal to leave the work of art alone. Real art has the capacity to make us nervous. By reducing the work of art to its content and then interpreting that, one tames the work of art. Interpretation makes art manageable, conformable.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)

Sisters define their rivalry in terms of competition for the gold cup of parental love. It is never perceived as a cup which runneth over, rather a finite vessel from which the more one sister drinks, the less is left for the others.
    Elizabeth Fishel (20th century)
