The AirPort Extreme is a Residential gateway product from Apple Inc. combining the functionality of a Router, Network switch, Wi-Fi base station and NAS as well as varied other functions. The name AirPort Extreme also refers to Apple's implementation of the (802.11g) protocol and the expansion cards and base stations that employ it. On January 9, 2007, the AirPort Extreme Base Station was updated to support the 802.11a/b/g and Draft-N protocols. This version was renamed to just AirPort Extreme. This revision also adds two LAN ports for a total of three, and removes the built-in modem, external antenna port, and added support for Power over Ethernet which has since been removed. It now more closely resembles the square-shaped 1st generation Apple TV and Mac mini, and is about the same size as the Mini. The AirPort Extreme base station can serve a maximum of 50 wireless clients simultaneously.

Famous quotes containing the words airport and/or extreme:
“Airplanes are invariably scheduled to depart at such times as 7:54, 9:21 or 11:37. This extreme specificity has the effect on the novice of instilling in him the twin beliefs that he will be arriving at 10:08, 1:43 or 4:22, and that he should get to the airport on time. These beliefs are not only erroneous but actually unhealthy.”
—Fran Lebowitz (b. 1950)
“The Battle of Waterloo is a work of art with tension and drama with its unceasing change from hope to fear and back again, change which suddenly dissolves into a moment of extreme catastrophe, a model tragedy because the fate of Europe was determined within this individual fate.”
—Stefan Zweig (18811942)
