Aftab Ahmad Sherpao - Family Influence in Politics

Family Influence in Politics

Aftab's family tree and cross-marriages in other influential families has given him a unique edge over his political opponents. Aftab's family (known as the Khans of Sherpao) has for long been a prominent and influential family in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The family belongs to the Mohammadzai tribe which has for long been a dominant tribe amongst the Pukhtuns. His father Khan Bahadur Ghulam Haider Khan Sherpao was a key figure in the Pakistan freedom movement and an influential political leader. From his mothers side, Aftab is the grandson of Haji Muhammad Sohbat Khan of Prang, another influential Pukhtun from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

His elder brother Hayat Muhammad Khan Sherpao was a founding member of the Pakistan Peoples Party, former Federal Minister and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor and Senior Minister. Aftab himself is the son-in-law of the brother of Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar, one of the pioneers of the Pakistan freedom movement. His eldest son, Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao, has already jumped into Provincial Politics and has been elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa twice.

Famous quotes containing the words family, influence and/or politics:

All happy families resemble one another, but each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
    Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910)

Important as fathers are, their influence on children shouldn’t be exaggerated just because they were ignored so long. There is no evidence that there is something especially good about fathers as caretakers. There are no areas where it can be said that fathers must do certain things in order to achieve certain outcomes in children. The same goes for mothers.
    Michael Lamb (late–20th century)

I am in politics because of the conflict between good and evil, and I believe that in the end good will triumph.
    Margaret Thatcher (b. 1925)
