The good critic is he who relates the adventures of his soul among masterpieces.
    Anatole France (1844–1924)

We know that their adventures are childish. They themselves are fools. They are ready to kill or be killed over a card-game in which an opponent—or they themselves—was cheating. Yet, thanks to such fellows, tragedies are possible.
    Jean Genet (1910–1986)

Never mind if you fall far short of the thing you want to do,—encourage your effort. If no one else will say it to you, say it to yourself. “Not so bad.” It will make the next effort easier and better.
    —Josephine Demott Robinson (1865–1948)
