Adenoidectomy - Frequency

Frequency

According to data recorded in 1971, more than one million Americans underwent tonsillectomies or adenoidectomies, combined or alone, of which 50,000 consisted of adenoidectomy alone.

By 1996, roughly a half million children underwent some surgery on their adenoids and/or tonsils in combined ambulatory and inpatient settings. This included 60,000 tonsillectomies, about 250,000 combined tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies, and about 125,000 adenoidectomies. By 2006, the total number had risen to over 700,000. However, when adjusted for population changes, the tonsillectomy "rate" dropped from 0.62 per thousand children to 0.53 per thousand. A larger decline for combined tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy was noted - from 2.20 per thousand to 1.46. There was no significant change in adenoidectomy rates for chronic infectious reasons (0.25 versus 0.21 per 1000.

Famous quotes containing the word frequency:

One is apt to be discouraged by the frequency with which Mr. Hardy has persuaded himself that a macabre subject is a poem in itself; that, if there be enough of death and the tomb in one’s theme, it needs no translation into art, the bold statement of it being sufficient.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)

The frequency of personal questions grows in direct proportion to your increasing girth. . . . No one would ask a man such a personally invasive question as “Is your wife having natural childbirth or is she planning to be knocked out?” But someone might ask that of you. No matter how much you wish for privacy, your pregnancy is a public event to which everyone feels invited.
    Jean Marzollo (20th century)
