Religion

There are two churches in the village. Holy Trinity Church, the Church of England parish church, stands on the site of the original Norman Church. In 1360 the estates of the Malbysse family passed into the hands of the Fairfax family, who pulled the old church down. The church stands a little way out of the village on the road to Bishopthorpe.

There is also a Methodist Church in the centre of the village, founded in 1880.

Famous quotes containing the word religion:

Their religion was sweetness and peace amidst toil and tears.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

They live together without king, without government, and each is his own master.... Beyond the fact that they have no church, no religion and are not idolaters, what more can I say? They live according to nature, and may be called Epicureans rather than Stoics.
    Amerigo Vespucci (1454–1512)

We think of religion as the symbolic expression of our highest moral ideals; we think of magic as a crude aggregate of superstitions. Religious belief seems to become mere superstitious credulity if we admit any relationship with magic. On the other hand our anthropological and ethnographical material makes it extremely difficult to separate the two fields.
    Ernst Cassirer (1874–1945)
