Ecology
Koa is the preferred host plant for the caterpillars of the Green Hawaiian Blue (Udara blackburni), which eat the flowers and fruits. Adults drink nectar from the flowers. Koa sap is eaten by the adult Kamehameha Butterfly (Vanessa tameamea).
