Early Life and Family

Vigoda was born in New York City, the son of Lena (née Moses) and Samuel Vigoda, Jewish immigrants from Russia. His father was a tailor and had three sons: Abe, Hy and Bill—a comic-book artist who drew for the Archie comics franchise and others in the 1940s. His surname "Vigoda" (выгода), is Russian for "benefit".

Vigoda was married to Beatrice Schy from February 25, 1968 until her death on April 30, 1992. Abe has one daughter, Carol, from his previous wife, Sonja Gohlke. Carol gave him three grandsons: Jaime, Paulie, and Steven. Vigoda enjoys playing handball.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or family:

The Americans never use the word peasant, because they have no idea of the class which that term denotes; the ignorance of more remote ages, the simplicity of rural life, and the rusticity of the villager have not been preserved among them; and they are alike unacquainted with the virtues, the vices, the coarse habits, and the simple graces of an early stage of civilization.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

Our life dreams the Utopia. Our death achieves the Ideal.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

Classical and romantic: private language of a family quarrel, a dead dispute over the distribution of emphasis between man and nature.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)
