Abbotts Ann - Present

Present

Today the village contains a village shop run by volunteers (which itself contains a post office - one of many recently threatened with closure), which achieved first prize in the Best Rural Retailer 2009 competition. There is also a parish church (St. Mary's), famous for its box pews and 49 virgin crowns. The village also has a village hall, a primary school, a playing field and a pub called the Eagle, as well as another well known pub in the neighbouring village of Little Ann, called the Poplar Farm Inn. The village is also home to one of the last remaining classic red phoneboxes left in England. The church displays the Maidens' garland, a funerary custom for deceased virgins which dates back from the 18th Century.

Famous quotes containing the word present:

The past is of no importance. The present is of no importance. It is with the future that we have to deal. For the past is what man should not have been. The present is what man ought not to be. The future is what artists are.
The facts: nothing matters but the facts: worship of the facts leads to everything, to happiness first of all and then to wealth.
    Edmond De Goncourt (1822–1896)

We should be careful never to imagine, that the wedding-day is the burial of love, but that in reality love then begins its best life; and if we set out upon that principle, and are mindful to keep it up, and give due attention and aid to the progress of love thus brought into the well ordered well sheltered garden, we may enjoy I believe as much happiness as is consistent with the imperfection of our present state of being.
    James Boswell (1740–1795)

Happy you poets who can be present and so present by a simple flicker of your genius, and not, like the clumsier race, have to lay a train and pile up faggots that may not after prove in the least combustible!
    Henry James (1843–1916)
