The islands are a noted base for sailing activities in the Bahamas, as well as resort tourism.
The Bahamas National Trust maintains six national parks in the Abacos Islands. These are

- Abaco National Park
- Black Sound Cay National Reserve
- Walker's Cay National Park
- Tilloo Cay National Reserve
- Fowl Cays National Reserve
