The Aachen Gospels may refer to either of two illuminated manuscript Gospel Books, more precisely known as the Aachen Coronation Gospels (Aachen, Cathedral Treasury, s.n.), a 10th century illuminated Gospel Book, or the Aachen Gospels of Otto III, made about 973 at Reichenau. The plain term "Aachen Gospels" is more likely to refer to the former. Both are important works of their respective periods; The Aachen Coronation Gospels of Carolingian art and Otto's gospels of Ottonian art. The former was created during the Carolingian renaissance and was illustrated in a style derived from Byzantine art.
