A1 Motorway (Romania)

The A1 motorway (Romanian: Autostrada A1) is a motorway in Romania currently undergoing major expansion. As of October 2012, the sections in service include a 110-kilometer long motorway linking Bucharest with Pitești, a city in Argeș County, the Sibiu motorway bypass (17.5 km, not connected to the Bucharest – Pitești segment) and Timișoara – Arad motorway (54 km, in the western part of Romania). The Bucharest – Pitești segment of the motorway was the first to be built in Romania. It was constructed between 1968 and 1973, during the communist regime, and upgraded in 2000. The motorway is part of the Pan-European corridor IV and is planned to be expanded to 576 km by 2020, connecting the capital city of Bucharest to the Banat region in western Romania and onwards to Central Europe via the Hungarian motorway network.
