8th Armored Division (United States) - Armor

Armor

The primary striking force of the Armored Division was the tank. The 8th was composed of 3 tank battalions:

  • 18th, 36th & 80th Tank Battalions

Each battalion comprised approximately 80 tanks and was organized as a headquarters unit and 6 companies:

  • a Headquarters Company,
  • a Service Company and
  • 4 tank companies referred to as A, B, C and D companies

The Headquarters unit was made up of the battalion command team and their vehicles; 3 M4A3 Sherman tanks (usually not used and held as a reserve) and various peeps (World War II US Armored divisions called the jeep a 'peep') and similar vehicles.

Famous quotes containing the word armor:

When a strong man, fully armed, guards his castle, his property is safe. But when one stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his plunder.
    Bible: New Testament, Luke 11:21.22.

...there are important considerations in the world beyond plain sewing and teaching dull little boys the alphabet. Any woman who has brains and willing hands finds twenty remunerative occupations open to her where formerly she would have found merely the inevitable two—plain sewing, or the dull little boys. All she had to do is to make her choice and then buckle on her armor of perseverance, while the world applauds.
    Clara (Marquise)

Such was the very armor he had on
When he the ambitious Norway combated.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
