Critical reception was negative. Something Awful included 8 Eyes in their Rom Pit series, stating, "What's more fun than being constantly attacked by creatures while attempting to keep your hawk from slamming its head against a stone wall in an suicidal fury?" Downwards Compatible also viewed it negatively in their NES Replay series, stating that the ideas presented in 8 Eyes "were all cool ideas, but just done in a lackluster manner and on a system that couldn't handle them."
