Famous quotes containing the words world, science, fiction and/or convention:
“That the world can be improved and yet must be celebrated as it is are contradictions. The beginning of maturity may be the recognition that both are true.”
—William Stott (b. 1940)
“What we know, is a point to what we do not know. Open any recent journal of science, and weigh the problems suggested concerning Light, Heat, Electricity, Magnetism, Physiology, Geology, and judge whether the interest of natural science is likely to be soon exhausted.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“If there were genders to genres, fiction would be unquestionably feminine.”
—William Gass (b. 1924)
“Every one knows about the young man who falls in love with the chorus-girl because she can kick his hat off, and his sisters friends cant or wont. But the youth who marries her, expecting that all her departures from convention will be as agile or as delightful to him as that, is still the classic example of folly.”
—Katharine Fullerton Gerould (18791944)
