24 Caprices For Solo Violin (Paganini)

24 Caprices For Solo Violin (Paganini)

The 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Op. 1, were written by Niccolò Paganini between 1802 and 1817 and published in 1819. They are also designated as M.S. 25 in Maria Rosa Moretti and Anna Sorrento's Catalogo tematico delle musiche di Niccolò Paganini, which was published in 1982. The caprices are in the form of études, with each number studying individual skills (double stopped trills, extremely fast switching of positions and strings, etc.)

Edition Peters first published them in 1819; Ricordi later published another edition in 1821. When Paganini released his caprices, he dedicated them "to the Artists" rather than to a specific person.

Unlike many earlier and later sets of 24 pieces, there was no intention to write these caprices in 24 different keys.

Famous quotes containing the words caprices, solo and/or violin:

She had caprices of a marvellous unexpectedness, and how is any one to imitate a caprice?
    Stendhal [Marie Henri Beyle] (1783–1842)

All mothers need instruction, nurturing, and an understanding mentor after the birth of a baby, but in this age of fast foods, fast tracks, and fast lanes, it doesn’t always happen. While we live in a society that provides recognition for just about every life event—from baptisms to bar mitzvahs, from wedding vows to funeral rites—the entry into parenting seems to be a solo flight, with nothing and no one to mark formally the new mom’s entry into motherhood.
    Sally Placksin (20th century)

So I cradle this average violin that knows
    Only forgotten showtunes, but argues
The possibility of free declamation anchored
    To a dull refrain....
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
