2009 Bowling Green Falcons Baseball Team - Regular Season

Regular Season

The Falcons began the season on a six-game losing streak, being swept in a three-game weekend series at Western Carolina and at nationally ranked (#26) Louisville. The Falcons followed the two series with their annual Florida trip during spring break, competing in the 2009 RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven and Lakeland, Florida from March 7–14. The Falcons would win their first game of the season in the tournament opener, defeating Fairfield 8–3. The Falcons would fare well during the tournament, posting a record of 5–3.

The Falcons had their home opener on March 17, defeating Michigan State in a slugfest, 16–13. Bowling Green opened conference play on March 20, hosting a three-game series with Western Michigan. The Falcons won the first game 5–2, but dropped the last two 13–12 in 10 innings and 8–4. Bowling Green continued conference play with a three-game road trip to DeKalb, Illinois to play Northern Illinois. The Falcons dropped the first game 6–4, before shutting out the Huskies in the second game 8–0. The third game of the series was cancelled, due to excessive snow and frigid temperatures.

On March 31, Danny Schmitz became the first Falcons baseball head coach and fifth coach in MAC history to win 500 games, as Bowling Green defeated Michigan 8–3 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Falcons had three games cancelled in 2009. The first was supposed to be a mid-week game between the Falcons and Dayton in Dayton, Ohio on March 3, but the game was cancelled due to the weather being too cold to play. The second cancellation of the season occurred on March 18, as the Falcons were supposed to compete against Cleveland State in Lorain, Ohio, but the game was cancelled two days before, due to inadequate field conditions. The third cancellation came on March 29 on what was to be the rubber game of a three-game series between Bowling Green and MAC opponent, Northern Illinois. The game was cancelled due to snow showers and frigid temperatures.

The Falcons finished the regular season with a 28-20 record and a 19-9 mark in conference play, good enough for the Falcons to clinch their second straight MAC Regular Season championship (7th overall) and the first overall seed in the 2009 MAC Baseball Tournament at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chilicothe, Ohio. Despite being the top seed in the tournament, the Falcons were upset by 8th-seed Central Michigan 6–2, followed by a 17–4 blowout from 5th-seed Miami (Ohio) to be eliminated after only playing two games in the tournament.

Famous quotes containing the words regular and/or season:

It was inspiriting to hear the regular dip of the paddles, as if they were our fins or flippers, and to realize that we were at length fairly embarked. We who had felt strangely as stage-passengers and tavern-lodgers were suddenly naturalized there and presented with the freedom of the lakes and woods.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The theater is a baffling business, and a shockingly wasteful one when you consider that people who have proven their worth, who have appeared in or been responsible for successful plays, who have given outstanding performances, can still, in the full tide of their energy, be forced, through lack of opportunity, to sit idle season after season, their enthusiasm, their morale, their very talent dwindling to slow gray death. Of finances we will not even speak; it is too sad a tale.
    Ilka Chase (1905–1978)
