Famous quotes containing the words foreign and, foreign, domestic and/or aid:

It is a curious emotion, this certain homesickness I have in mind. With Americans, it is a national trait, as native to us as the rollercoaster or the jukebox. It is no simple longing for the home town or country of our birth. The emotion is Janus-faced: we are torn between a nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known.
    Carson McCullers (1917–1967)

Humour is the first of the gifts to perish in a foreign tongue.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

The domestic career is no more natural to all women than the military career is natural to all men.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

Frustrate a Frenchman, he will drink himself to death; an Irishman, he will die of angry hypertension; a Dane, he will shoot himself; an American, he will get drunk, shoot you, then establish a million dollar aid program for your relatives. Then he will die of an ulcer.
—Stanley Rudin. The New York Times (August 22, 1963)
