Famous quotes containing the words big, men and/or basketball:
“There are big men, men of intellect, intellectual men, men of talent and men of action; but the great man is difficult to find, and it needsapart from discernmenta certain greatness to find him.”
—Margot Asquith (18641945)
“... by dint of admitting to himself that he was too much as other men were, he had become remarkably unlike them in thisthat he could excuse others for thinking slightly of him, and could judge impartially of their conduct even when it told against him.”
—George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)
“Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.”
—Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
