2006 BDO World Darts Championship
The 2006 Embassy World Professional Darts Championship was held from 7–15 January 2006 at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Surrey. Defending champion Raymond van Barneveld was aiming to win a fifth BDO world title, equalling the record set by Eric Bristow. However, he was beaten 7-5 in the final by Dutch qualifier Jelle Klaasen. Klaasen became the youngest World Champion at aged 21 and became the first qualifier to win the World Championship since Keith Deller in 1983, who became the youngest World Champion himself, aged 23. This would eventually be Barneveld's last ever appearance at the Lakeside as he would switch to the rival Professional Darts Corporation the next month.
In the women's tournament, Trina Gulliver continued her domination of the women's game by winning her sixth successive title, defeating Francis Hoenselaar 2-0. It was the third successive year that Gulliver and Hoenselaar had met in the final and the fourth time in five years.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or darts:
“... there was the first Balkan war and the second Balkan war and then there was the first world war. It is extraordinary how having done a thing once you have to do it again, there is the pleasure of coincidence and there is the pleasure of repetition, and so there is the second world war, and in between there was the Abyssinian war and the Spanish civil war.”
—Gertrude Stein (18741946)
“risk is full: every living thing in
siege: the demand is life, to keep life: the small
white blacklegged egret, how beautiful, quietly stalks and spears
the shallows, darts to shore
to stab”
—Archie Randolph Ammons (b. 1926)
