2002 Football League Cup Final

The 2002 Football League Cup Final was played between Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham Hotspur at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, on Sunday, 24 February 2002. Blackburn won the match 2–1.

Blackburn opened the scoring with a goal from Matt Jansen, but Christian Ziege soon equalised for Spurs. Andrew Cole scored the winner in the 68th minute with a typical instinctive strike after mistakes in the Spurs defence. Les Ferdinand could have made the match square after a close one-on-one chance with Friedel, but failed to make anything of it. In the final minute Teddy Sheringham controversially had a claim for a penalty turned down by referee Graham Poll.

Famous quotes containing the words football, league, cup and/or final:

People stress the violence. That’s the smallest part of it. Football is brutal only from a distance. In the middle of it there’s a calm, a tranquility. The players accept pain. There’s a sense of order even at the end of a running play with bodies stewn everywhere. When the systems interlock, there’s a satisfaction to the game that can’t be duplicated. There’s a harmony.
    Don Delillo (b. 1926)

I am not impressed by the Ivy League establishments. Of course they graduate the best—it’s all they’ll take, leaving to others the problem of educating the country. They will give you an education the way the banks will give you money—provided you can prove to their satisfaction that you don’t need it.
    Peter De Vries (b. 1910)

The cup of Morgan Fay is shattered.
    Life is a bitter sage,
    And we are weary infants
    In a palsied age.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

He valued emotion—not for itself, but because it is the only final path to intimacy.
