2000 Millennium Attack Plots - LAX Bombing Plot

LAX Bombing Plot

Ahmed Ressam, an Algerian citizen living in Montreal, Canada planned to bomb Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on New Year's Eve 1999/2000. He was arrested at Port Angeles, Washington, the U.S. port of entry, on December 14, 1999. Customs officials then found a cache of explosives that could have produced "a blast forty times greater than that of a devastating car bomb" and four timing devices hidden in the spare tire well in the trunk of the rented car in which he had traveled from Canada. He and three other Algerians stood trial for the crime. Ressam began cooperating with investigators in 2001. He was initially sentenced to 22 years in prison, but in February 2010 an appellate court reversed and remanded the case based on procedural errors and recommended that his sentence be extended.

Famous quotes containing the words lax, bombing and/or plot:

    We want nights
Of vague adventure, lips lax wet and warm,
Bees in the stomach, sweat across the brow. Now.
    Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)

Did all of us feel interested in bombing buildings only when the men we slept with were urging us on?
    Jane Alpert (b. 1947)

James’s great gift, of course, was his ability to tell a plot in shimmering detail with such delicacy of treatment and such fine aloofness—that is, reluctance to engage in any direct grappling with what, in the play or story, had actually “taken place”Mthat his listeners often did not, in the end, know what had, to put it in another way, “gone on.”
    James Thurber (1894–1961)
