The final match of the first FIFA Club World Championship ever, disputed in Brazil, pitted the two Brazilian clubs which were playing the tournament, Corinthians and Vasco da Gama. After a goalless draw during the 120 minutes, Corinthians won the penalty shoot-out 4–3, becoming the first club to lift the FIFA Club World Cup. It is note-worthy that Corinthians are the only-ever World Champions to beat a side from their home country in the final.
Famous quotes containing the words club, world and/or final:
“He loved to sit silent in a corner of his club and listen to the loud chattering of politicians, and to think how they all were in his powerhow he could smite the loudest of them, were it worth his while to raise his pen for such a purpose.”
—Anthony Trollope (18151882)
“I believe a man is born first unto himselffor the happy developing of himself, while the world is a nursery, and the pretty things are to be snatched for, and pleasant things tasted; some people seem to exist thus right to the end. But most are born again on entering manhood; then they are born to humanity, to a consciousness of all the laughing, and the never-ceasing murmur of pain and sorrow that comes from the terrible multitudes of brothers.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“Remember the waterfront shack with the sign FRESH FISH SOLD HERE. Of course its fresh, were on the ocean. Of course its for sale, were not giving it away. Of course its here, otherwise the sign would be someplace else. The final sign: FISH.”
—Peggy Noonan (b. 1950)
