1st Army Tank Brigade (United Kingdom)

The British 1st Army Tank Brigade took part in the Battle of France, serving as part of the British Expeditionary Force. It fought against the Germans in Northern France and Belgium, and covered the Allied retreat to Dunkirk. It lost all of its equipment on the beaches following the retreat. The reformed 1st Army Tank Brigade was reequipped and redeployed to North Africa. There it took part in Operation Crusader, being a part of the XIII Corps. Attached to the 2nd South African Division, it took part in the conquest of Bardia December 1941-January 1942.

It was at the time equipped with Valentine infantry tanks.

Famous quotes containing the words army and/or brigade:

These semi-traitors [Union generals who were not hostile to slavery] must be watched.—Let us be careful who become army leaders in the reorganized army at the end of this Rebellion. The man who thinks that the perpetuity of slavery is essential to the existence of the Union, is unfit to be trusted. The deadliest enemy the Union has is slavery—in fact, its only enemy.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

Rational free spirits are the light brigade who go on ahead and reconnoitre the ground which the heavy brigade of the orthodox will eventually occupy.
    —G.C. (Georg Christoph)
