Regular Season

  • April 1 - Seven pitches into the first game of the season, at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, home plate umpire John McSherry collapses on the field and dies of a massive heart attack. Famous quotes containing the words regular and/or season:

    While you’re playing cards with a regular guy or having a bite to eat with him, he seems a peaceable, good-humoured and not entirely dense person. But just begin a conversation with him about something inedible, politics or science, for instance, and he ends up in a deadend or starts in on such an obtuse and base philosophy that you can only wave your hand and leave.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

    Utterly frozen is this youthful lady,
    Even as the snow that lies within the shade;
    For she is no more moved than is the stone
    By the sweet season which makes warm the hills
    Dante Alighieri (1265–1321)
