1993 FA Cup Final

The 1993 FA Cup Final was contested by Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley. The original match, played on 15 May 1993 finished 1–1, with Arsenal winning the replay on 20 May; 2–1 after extra-time.

It was Arsenal's sixth success in the competition and their first for 14 years, with the victory making them the first ever English side to achieve a domestic cup double.

It was Sheffield Wednesday's first appearance in the FA Cup final for 27 years. They also reached the Football League Cup final that season, also losing 2–1 to Arsenal (though without a replay), and have not appeared in a domestic cup final since, though they have appeared in the Football League Cup semi-finals twice since then.

The game is also notable for being the last appearance of veteran Arsenal defender David O'Leary, who left shortly afterwards to join Leeds United after an 18-year spell with the Gunners which had yielded 722 competitive games and six major trophies.

The kick-off for the replay was delayed by 30 minutes after an accident on the M1 motorway had delayed the arrival of most of Sheffield Wednesday's fans.

Famous quotes containing the words cup and/or final:

There is not enough exercise in this way of life. I try to make up by active gymnastics before I dress when I get up, by walking rapidly in the lower hall and the greenhouse after each meal for perhaps five to ten minutes, and a good hand rubbing before going to bed. I eat moderately; drink one cup of coffee at breakfast and one cup of tea at lunch and no other stimulant. My health is now, and usually, excellent.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

By his mere quiet power, on the minds of the now contestants, He could have either saved or destroyed the Union without a human contest. Yet the contest began. And having begun He could give the final victory to either side any day. Yet the contest proceeds.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)
