To many sports fans, especially in Chicago, this series was an anti-climax, as it was overshadowed by Michael Jordan's announcement of his retirement from the NBA shortly before Game 2. Jordan was later criticized by Chicago media for trying to "steal the thunder" away from the White Sox. A few months later, Jordan signed a minor league contract with the White Sox in his attempt for a baseball career.
