1989 Ryder Cup

1989 Ryder Cup

The 28th Ryder Cup Matches were held at The Belfry in Wishaw, Warwickshire, England (near Sutton Coldfield). For only the second time, the competition ended in a draw at 14 to 14 points, but the European team retained the Cup since they had won it outright in 1987. The deciding match was between José Maria Cañizares and Ken Green. Cañizares made a two-foot putt on the 18th green to give Europe 14 points and ensure that they retained the Cup. The subsequent four matches still out on the course resulted in U.S. wins and an overall draw.

Famous quotes containing the words ryder and/or cup:

The despot’s heel is on thy shore,
    Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
    Maryland!
    Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle-queen of yore,
    Maryland! my Maryland!
    —James Ryder Randall (1839–1908)

    In poorer lands
No one touches the water of life.
    It has no taste
    And though it refreshes absolutely
It is a cup that must also pass
    Until everybody
    Gets some advantage....
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
