Qualifying
The two McLarens were on the front row with Senna half a second ahead of Prost. Third was Berger in the Ferrari but over 1.5 seconds behind Senna. Boutsen was fourth ahead of Patrese and then Mansell in the second Ferrari. Piquet and Nakajima failed to qualify; it was the first time that both Lotus cars entered for a World Championship race failed to qualify.
