1988 FA Cup Final

The 1988 FA Cup Final took place on 14 May 1988 at Wembley Stadium. It was contested between Wimbledon, unfashionable and unfancied, and Liverpool, one of the dominant teams of the 1980s and newly-crowned league champions.

The result was one of the biggest shocks in the history of the competition as the London side won 1–0 to win the cup for the only time in their history. The final is also notable for featuring the first ever penalty save in an FA Cup final (by Dave Beasant from John Aldridge) and the first goalkeeper (Beasant) to captain an FA Cup winning side. It was the last FA Cup final to be broadcast by both ITV and BBC, which had happened since 1958. Wimbledon's victory ended Liverpool's bid for a unique second double after they had completed their first double in 1986.

Famous quotes containing the words cup and/or final:

I write mainly for the kindly race of women. I am their sister, and in no way exempt from their sorrowful lot. I have drank [sic] the cup of their limitations to the dregs, and if my experience can help any sad or doubtful woman to outleap her own shadow, and to stand bravely out in the sunshine to meet her destiny, whatever it may be, I shall have done well; I have not written this book in vain.
    Amelia E. Barr (1831–1919)

Her wrongs are ... indissolubly linked with all undefended woe, all helpless suffering, and the plenitude of her “rights” will mean the final triumph of all right over might, the supremacy of the moral forces of reason and justice and love in the government of the nation. God hasten the day.
    Anna Julia Cooper (1859–1964)
