1974 African Cup of Nations

The 1974 African Cup of Nations was the ninth edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa (CAF). It was hosted by Egypt.

Just like in 1972, the field of eight teams was split into two groups of four. Zaire won its second championship (their first win came as the Democratic Republic of Congo), tying Zambia 2-2 in the final and beating them 2-0 in the replay . Zaire went on to qualify for the World Cup later that year.

Famous quotes containing the words african, cup and/or nations:

All great religions, in order to escape absurdity, have to admit a dilution of agnosticism. It is only the savage, whether of the African bush or the American gospel tent, who pretends to know the will and intent of God exactly and completely.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

I believe that water is the only drink for a wise man: wine is not so noble a liquor; and think of dashing the hopes of a morning with a cup of warm coffee, or of an evening with a dish of tea! Ah, how low I fall when I am tempted by them! Even music may be intoxicating. Such apparently slight causes destroyed Greece and Rome, and will destroy England and America.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Sometimes we think of the nations lying asleep,
    Curled blindly in impenetrable sorrow,
And then the thought confounds us with its strangeness.
    Edwin Muir (1887–1959)
