1954 Masters Tournament

The 1954 Masters Tournament was the 18th Masters Tournament, contested from April 8 to April 12 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Sam Snead defeated Ben Hogan 70-71 in an 18-hole Monday playoff to win his third Masters tournament. It was Snead's seventh and final major victory.

Sneads's 289 (+1), along with Jack Burke, Jr. in 1956 and Zach Johnson in 2007, remains the highest winning total in Masters history. Amateur Billy Joe Patton led after the second round and during the fourth, but a seven at the 13th hole ended his title hopes.

Famous quotes containing the word masters:

The President has paid dear for his White House. It has commonly cost him all his peace, and the best of his manly attributes. To preserve for a short time so conspicuous an appearance before the world, he is content to eat dust before the real masters who stand erect behind the throne.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
