1934 European Athletics Championships

The 1st European Athletics Championships were staged at the Stadio Comunale in Turin, Italy from 7 September to 9 September 1934 including only men's events. Women's championships were held separately in 1938, but men's and women's events were combined at one venue from 1946.

The discussion on the European Championships started before 1930, when a Hungarian member of the IAAF, dr. Stankovics, submitted his idea to the International Federation. During the Congress of IAAF in Berlin, on 24 September 1933 the Federation approved his proposals and Italy hosted the first championships.

Famous quotes containing the word european:

In verity ... we are the poor. This humanity we would claim for ourselves is the legacy, not only of the Enlightenment, but of the thousands and thousands of European peasants and poor townspeople who came here bringing their humanity and their sufferings with them. It is the absence of a stable upper class that is responsible for much of the vulgarity of the American scene. Should we blush before the visitor for this deficiency?
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)
