York College (York) - Students' Union

Students' Union

York College Students' Union was formed in 1999 following the merger of York VI Form College and York College of Further and Higher Education. Prior to the merger there were separate Students' unions for each of the colleges that were both affiliated to NUS. Throughout much of the 1999/2000 academic year the two students' unions effectively operated separately with one president leading the overall structure. This continued until the introduction of a new constitution governing the activity of the new body which came into force in March 2000. The current constitution was ratified by the corporation of York College in March 2008 and is due to be reviewed by March 2013. The union was nominated for an award by the Centre for Excellence in Leadership in 2006-07 and was short-listed as a runner up in the category of most improved provider. It is a member of the National Union of Students and shareholder union of NUS Services Ltd. In April 2012 York College Students' Union became the first Further Education Student Union to achieve the NUS Green Impact Silver Standard.

Famous quotes containing the word union:

Some are petitioning the State to dissolve the Union, to disregard the requisitions of the President. Why do they not dissolve it themselves,—the union between themselves and the State,—and refuse to pay their quota into its treasury? Do not they stand in the same relation to the State that the State does to the Union? And have not the same reasons prevented the State from resisting the Union which have prevented them from resisting the State?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
