Wide Bandgap Semiconductors

Wide bandgap semiconductors are semiconductor materials with electronic band gaps significantly larger than one electron volts (eV). The exact threshold of "wideness" often depends on the context, but for common usage, "wide" bandgap typically refers to material with a band gap significantly greater than that of the commonly-used semiconductors, Silicon ( 1.1 eV) or gallium arsenide (1.4 eV).

Applications include electronic devices such as optoelectronic and power devices. Wide bandgap materials are often utilized in applications in which high-temperature operation is important.

Famous quotes containing the word wide:

There comes a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given him to till.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
