Venice Marathon

The Venice Marathon (Italian: Maratona di Venezia) is a marathon road race that has been held each year in Venice since 1986, usually in October. The race is currently sponsored by Casino di Venezia (Venice Casino), and thus it is known as the Casino di Venezia Venice Marathon. Ponte della Libertà and Parco San Giuliano are among the landmarks which are featured on the course. The competition celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010 and that year it hosted the men's Italian marathon championships, which was won by Migidio Bourifa.

Since 2000, East African runners have dominated the elite races – Moroccan-born Frenchman El Hassan Lahssini is the only men's winner outside of this region since 1998. The course records are both held by Kenyans: John Komen holds the men's record of 2:08:13 hours while Helena Kirop is the women's holder with 2:23:37.

Famous quotes containing the words venice and/or marathon:

I have been oranging and fat,
    carrot colored, gaped at,
allowing my cracked o’s to drop on the sea
    near Venice and Mombasa.
    Over Maine I have rested.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

In their eyes I have seen
the pin men of madness in marathon trim
race round the track of the stadium pupil.
