National Merit Commended Scholars and Semifinalist
Over the past decade Vanguard College Preparatory school has had double digit percentages of their graduating class achieve national merit commended scholar or semi-finalist recognition. Vanguard has honored these noted students by featuring them in school advertisements featured in local print publications. The only class featuring national merit honorees not to be honored in these adds since 2001 is the class of ’07. After the ‘07 honoraries were excluded from the local recognition Vanguard continued the tradition by recognizing the National Merit Honorees of 2008. Exclusion from the school print advertisement campaign was believed to be racially motivated. Members of the class of the class excluded were Diane Valahu, Doo Hastings, Austin Probe, Austin Freeman, and Emily Smith.
In the last five years, Vanguard has had 11 National Merit Finalists, 15 Commended Scholars and 5 Hispanic Scholars.

Famous quotes containing the words national, merit, commended and/or scholars:
“A good man will not engage even in a national cause, without examining the justice of it.”
—Samuel Richardson (16891761)
“Merit at Courts, without favour, will do little or nothing; favour, without merit, will do a good deal; but favour and merit together will do everything.”
—Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (16941773)
“I allow a Beauty to be as much to be commended for the Elegance of her Dress, as a Wit for that of his Language; yet if she has stolen the Colour of her Ribbands from another, or had Advice about her Trimmings, I shall not allow her the Praise of Dress, any more than I would call a Plagiary an Author.”
—Richard Steele (16721729)
“Scholars and artists thrown together are often annoyed at the puzzle of where they differ. Both work from knowledge; but I suspect they differ most importantly in the way their knowledge is come by. Scholars get theirs with conscientious thoroughness along projected lines of logic; poets theirs cavalierly and as it happens in and out of books. They stick to nothing deliberately, but let what will stick to them like burrs where they walk in the fields.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
