Famous quotes containing the word fate:

For when we must resign our vital breath,
    Our Loves by Fate benighted,
We by this friendship shall survive in death,
    Even in divorce united.
Weak Love through fortune or distrust
    In time forgets to burn,
But this pursues us to the Urn,
    And marries either’s Dust.
    Thomas Stanley (1625–1678)

The man who arrives young believes that he exercises his will because his star is shining. The man who only asserts himself at thirty has a balanced idea of what will power and fate have each contributed, the one who gets there at forty is liable to put the emphasis on will alone.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

The Battle of Waterloo is a work of art with tension and drama with its unceasing change from hope to fear and back again, change which suddenly dissolves into a moment of extreme catastrophe, a model tragedy because the fate of Europe was determined within this individual fate.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)
