After her initial shakedown, Swanson began escort and convoy duties between New England, Bermuda, and Iceland. She escorted the battleships Washington (BB-56) and North Carolina (BB-55), and aircraft carrier Hornet (CV-8), on their trial runs in late 1941. Famous quotes containing the word history:

This above all makes history useful and desirable: it unfolds before our eyes a glorious record of exemplary actions.
    Titus Livius (Livy)

A man will not need to study history to find out what is best for his own culture.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

When we of the so-called better classes are scared as men were never scared in history at material ugliness and hardship; when we put off marriage until our house can be artistic, and quake at the thought of having a child without a bank-account and doomed to manual labor, it is time for thinking men to protest against so unmanly and irreligious a state of opinion.
    William James (1842–1910)
