Urban Area of Copenhagen

The urban area of Copenhagen or Greater Copenhagen (Danish: Storkøbenhavn or Hovedstadsområdet) consist of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg municipalities and the former Copenhagen County, except for the municipalities Høje-Taastrup and Ledøje-Smørum. In all, it consists of 18 municipalities, and except parts of Ballerup, Greve (of former Roskilde County), Ishøj, former Søllerød and former Værløse, mentioned with (the part of) their population included from 2007. Ishøj and Greve Strand are included for the first time since 1999. As of January 2012 this area had a population of 1,213,822 inhabitants. Statistics Denmark states that the definition of the urban area is based on UN's 200m definition. However the UN's 200m definition is obviously not used at the western parts of Amager island (this part of Amager is splitted between Copenhagen and Tårnby municipalities, but is an unpopulated area larger than 10 km2 or on the unpopulated Saltholm and Peberholm islands. The urban limits can also be disputed at several places.

Famous quotes containing the words urban and/or area:

The gay world that flourished in the half-century between 1890 and the beginning of the Second World War, a highly visible, remarkably complex, and continually changing gay male world, took shape in New York City.... It is not supposed to have existed.
George Chauncey, U.S. educator, author. Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940, p. 1, Basic Books (1994)

Prestige is the shadow of money and power. Where these are, there it is. Like the national market for soap or automobiles and the enlarged arena of federal power, the national cash-in area for prestige has grown, slowly being consolidated into a truly national system.
    C. Wright Mills (1916–1962)
