Organization and Administration

UCSD is one of the ten general campuses of the University of California system which is governed by a publicly appointed 26-member Board of Regents and administered by a president whose office is located in Oakland, California. Mark Yudof became the 19th president of the University system in June 2008. The board of regents appoint chancellors to serve as the chief administrative officer of each individual general campus. On August 1, 2012, Pradeep Khosla began his term as the eighth chancellor of UCSD, following the resignation of the previous chancellor, Marye Anne Fox. Chancellor Khosla's base salary of $411,000 annually has been the subject of controversy. The chancellor has an immediate staff of eight vice chancellors for academic affairs, research, marine sciences, student affairs, planning, external relations, business affairs, and health sciences.

The university operates on an academic quarter system with three primary academic quarters beginning in late September and ending in mid June.

Famous quotes containing the word organization:

Science, unguided by a higher abstract principle, freely hands over its secrets to a vastly developed and commercially inspired technology, and the latter, even less restrained by a supreme culture saving principle, with the means of science creates all the instruments of power demanded from it by the organization of Might.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)
