United States Swimming National Championships

The United States Swimming National Championships (aka "Nationals") are held annually, typically in early August. The event is organized by USA Swimming, and is held in a long course (50m) pool. In the past, and as recently as 2007, there were 2 meets annually: and Spring and Summer Nationals. The Spring meet began as a 25-yard (short course) meet, while the Summer meet was long course. Prior to USA Swimming's creation in the late 1970s, the meet was run by the AAU.

Phillips 66 began sponsoring the meet in 1973, which continues through today although the branding of the sponsorship changed to ConocoPhillips in the early 2002s. This is one of the longest sponsors in U.S. sports.

Famous quotes containing the words united states, united, states, swimming and/or national:

When Mr. Apollinax visited the United States
His laughter tinkled among the teacups.

And of Priapus in the shrubbery
Gaping at the lady in the swing.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

Prior to the meeting, there was a prayer. In general, in the United States there was always praying.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

If the Soviet Union can give up the Brezhnev Doctrine for the Sinatra Doctrine, the United States can give up the James Monroe Doctrine for the Marilyn Monroe Doctrine: Let’s all go to bed wearing the perfume we like best.
    Carlos Fuentes (b. 1928)

Loosed betwixt eye and lid, the swimming beams
Of memory, blind school of cuttlefish,
Rise to the air, plunge to the cold streams....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

Humanism, it seems, is almost impossible in America where material progress is part of the national romance whereas in Europe such progress is relished because it feels nice.
    Paul West (b. 1930)
