Turbine Locomotive

A turbine locomotive may be one of the following:

  • A gas turbine locomotive uses a gas turbine as a power source and drives the wheels via a mechanical transmission.
  • A gas turbine-electric locomotive also uses a gas turbine, but the turbine powers an alternator which in turn powers traction motors.
  • A steam turbine locomotive uses a boiler and steam turbine as a power source.

Famous quotes containing the word locomotive:

A bill... is the most extraordinary locomotive engine that the genius of man ever produced. It would keep on running during the longest lifetime, without ever once stopping of its own accord.
