Tornado Watches in The United States

In the United States, the Storm Prediction Center (a national guidance center of the National Weather Service) issues watches for areas likely to produce tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. The watch boxes are usually issued in the format of " __ miles (north and south; east and west; either side) of a line from __ miles (direction) of (City, State), to __ miles (another direction) of (another City, State)." For example: "50 miles either side of a line from 10 miles northeast of Columbia, South Carolina to 15 miles south-southwest of Montgomery, Alabama". (Either side means perpendicular to the center line.) When displayed on a map, they appear as a red outline. In addition, a list of all counties included in its area of responsibility is issued by each NWS forecast office for each watch.

Famous quotes containing the words united states, tornado, watches, united and/or states:

Hollywood ... was the place where the United States perpetrated itself as a universal dream and put the dream into mass production.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

The sumptuous age of stars and images is reduced to a few artificial tornado effects, pathetic fake buildings, and childish tricks which the crowd pretends to be taken in by to avoid feeling too disappointed. Ghost towns, ghost people. The whole place has the same air of obsolescence about it as Sunset or Hollywood Boulevard.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)

In the long, sleepless watches of the night,
A gentle face—the face of one long dead—
Looks at me from the wall,
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1809–1882)

The United Nations cannot do anything, and never could; it is not an animate entity or agent. It is a place, a stage, a forum and a shrine ... a place to which powerful people can repair when they are fearful about the course on which their own rhetoric seems to be propelling them.
    Conor Cruise O’Brien (b. 1917)

Canadians look down on the United States and consider it Hell. They are right to do so. Canada is to the United States what, in Dante’s scheme, Limbo is to Hell.
    Irving Layton (b. 1912)
