Sex Differences
In Western societies, studies have shown that women have higher rates of mental illness than men. From early adolescence through adulthood, women are twice as likely as men to experience depression. Furthermore, it has been shown in certain studies that married women are more likely to suffer from ailments such as depression than single women. In relation to the effect proposed by Kaufman, it should be noted that Sylvia Plath was married at the time of her suicide.
