Sullivan Upper School - Music

Music

The school involves a wide range of musical talent which is represented in the many musical groups held throughout the week. These include Orchestra, Jazz band, Junior Choir, Traditional group, Brass band and Sullivan Singers. there are also several small groups of musicians playing at many events inside and outside school, these include a jazz quartet "Jazz Inc.", string quartets, wind ensembles and pop bands, including the rock and roll band Velvet Brick.

Notable events on Sullivan's calendar include the annual Prize day. This provides an opportunity for Sullivan to display its musical talent. Those present will never forget when birds stopped singing to listen on the Prize day of 2007 when Jonathan Boyd, founder and central figure of Jazz Inc, played a magnificent cadence during a piece by Sullivan's wind band. Anne Boyd, mother and exemplary citizen of this nation, was very proud.

Famous quotes containing the word music:

    Music is either sacred or secular. The sacred agrees with its dignity, and here has its greatest effect on life, an effect that remains the same through all ages and epochs. Secular music should be cheerful throughout.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

    Slow, slow, fresh fount, keep time with my salt tears;
    Yet slower yet, oh faintly gentle springs:
    List to the heavy part the music bears,
    “Woe weeps out her division when she sings.”
    Droop herbs and flowers;
    Fall grief in showers;
    “Our beauties are not ours”:
    Oh, I could still,
    Like melting snow upon some craggy hill,
    Drop, drop, drop, drop,
    Since nature’s pride is, now, a withered daffodil.
    Ben Jonson (1572–1637)

    This music crept by me upon the waters,
    Allaying both their fury and my passion
    With its sweet air; thence have I followed it,
    Or it hath drawn me rather.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
