Stress Analysis - Analysis Methods

Analysis Methods

The analysis of stress within a body implies the determination at each point of the body of the magnitudes of nine stress components. In other words, it is the determination of the internal distribution of stresses. An alternative method used in stress analysis is the determination of the internal distribution of strains.

A key part of analysis involves determining the type of loads acting on a structure, including tension, compression, shear, torsion, bending or a combination of some of these loads. When forces are applied repeatedly nearly all materials will rupture or fail at a lower stress than they would under a steady state load condition. The analysis to determine stresses under these cyclic loading conditions is termed fatigue analysis and is often applied to aerodynamic structural systems.

Famous quotes containing the words analysis and/or methods:

Whatever else American thinkers do, they psychologize, often brilliantly. The trouble is that psychology only takes us so far. The new interest in families has its merits, but it will have done us all a disservice if it turns us away from public issues to private matters. A vision of things that has no room for the inner life is bankrupt, but a psychology without social analysis or politics is both powerless and very lonely.
    Joseph Featherstone (20th century)

We are lonesome animals. We spend all our life trying to be less lonesome. One of our ancient methods is to tell a story begging the listener to say—and to feel—”Yes, that’s the way it is, or at least that’s the way I feel it. You’re not as alone as you thought.”
    John Steinbeck (1902–1968)
