McMahon's brother, John, was an assistant manager of Shrewsbury Town, and was formerly on the coaching staff at Tranmere Rovers and now the current Reserves Manager for Liverpool FC, and his son, Steve McMahon, Jr. is a defender who played for Perth Glory F.C. and Blackpool and was loaned out to Kidderminster Harriers in 2004.
